On Day 4 of our trip, Adam woke up in Columbus, Ohio with awesome bedhead. :)
After a great breakfast at the hotel, we loaded up the van again and got on the road by 9:30. We reached our 1000 mile mark in Ohio, a little outside of Columbus.
Our destination for the day was Historic Kirtland. We arrived at the visitors center at noon and had a picnic lunch.
We were told that the center was at capacity for visitors, so we went to the nearby Isaac Morley Farm first.
We heard the story of Mary Elizabeth Rollins, the 11-year-old girl who was lent a Book of Mormon by Isaac Morley for one night. She stayed up all night reading it and memorized the first verse. Brother Morley was impressed and let her keep the copy of the Book of Mormon. Since Anwyn was 11 years old, the missionary called her up to the front as a visual display to help illustrate the story.
After the farm we went to see the Kirtland Temple. The temple is owned by the Community of Christ, so we paid a preservation fee to watch the video and take the tour inside the temple. It was neat to be in a place that that was the scene of important events in the restoration of the gospel. At the end of the tour we sang "The Spirit of God".
After the temple we went back to the visitors center. A sweet sister missionary took our family on a tour of the buildings. Our first stop was the Newel K. Whitney Store.
It was interesting to go inside and see the types of items that would have been for sale in the early 1830's. We found John Tanner's name on the list!
It was most interesting to be in the store and hear of some of the significant events that occurred in that building. Thinking of the Prophet Joseph walking and living in that place, receiving revelations, the school of the prophets, etc.
In the upper room of the store, the missionary shared a tender testimony, and we sang "Families can be Together Forever". That was a sacred place.
After the store we also toured the Whitney Home, the Sawmill, and the Ashery. Lily got a little hands on experience stirring the ash.
Once we left Kirtland, we still had a few hours to drive to our hotel. That night we stayed in Buffalo, New York. Our hotel was a fancy building downtown, with valet parking. We were once again pleased to have two rooms with plenty of space to sleep everyone.
Jared and Lily went for a walk to pick up dinner at a nearby restaurant (Jim's Steakout). We had good sandwiches/burgers. Anwyn wasn't feeling well, so she was especially happy to be out of the car.
